I am so sorry. I am going to try to keep the spirit of Domino alive. Starting with...announcing a winner to the contest. Stay tuned! Its soon to come!<br />Love,<br />BetsyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300906492348282767.post-1610838533128362172009-02-25T19:05:00.000-08:002009-02-25T19:47:16.507-08:00The Fabulousness of Ms. Valorie HartI want to share one of the <a href="http://savedomino.blogspot.com/2009/02/contest-how-has-domino-inspired-you.html">Contest</a> entries I've received. Ms. Valorie Hart of <a href="http://visualvamp.blogspot.com/">Visual Vamp </a>hails from the great city of New Orleans. Now I don't know about y'all, but I can hardly imagine how hard its been to live in the midst of such destruction and devastation and depression... it must make creating a happy sanctuary in your home that much more important.<br /><br />Ms. Hart on told me that Domino was her post-Katrina therapy. See, Mr. Conde - see what you're doing? By closing domino, you are abandoning New Orleans to the depths of despair....for shame. (maybe guilt will work on them)<br /><br />Valorie also wrote of how Domino inspired her:<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">"I imagine I am like zillions of others who love decor, their homes, and work on a budget. Though I'm not the young thing everyone thinks domino only appealed too, I fell in love with the fresh rooms that made me feel young. So for my post Katrina post depression ha ha, domino was a treasure trove of eye candy. I always shopped eBay, flea markets, garage sales, tag sales, junk stores, discount big boxes, etc. To see a magazine validate this type of realistic approach to such a beautiful end result was validation. I can't control what goes on outside of my door, but I can make my world pretty on the inside."<br /><br />And check out these photos of the Hart House - the woman practices what she preaches. Her chocolate brown living room is cozy yet elegant (I'm totally jealous of anyone who can use warm browns in their decor. My husband has an aversion to such and so chocolate browns are forbidden chez moi) -<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaYLXATQQrI/AAAAAAAAAII/2AY9c0rt0Ck/s1600-h/DominoContest_ValerieHart.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaYLXATQQrI/AAAAAAAAAII/2AY9c0rt0Ck/s400/DominoContest_ValerieHart.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306941700748362418" border="0" /></a><br />I love the textured accent wall and the pops of blue in her bedroom (I'm addicted to all things turquoise or teal or peacock in hue) -<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaYLbGXqxPI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/9CKi3pOibsU/s1600-h/DominoContest_ValerieHart2.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 325px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaYLbGXqxPI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/9CKi3pOibsU/s400/DominoContest_ValerieHart2.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306941771096966386" border="0" /></a><br /><br />And look at this holiday tableau - wouldn't it be nice to awake on Christmas morning to a treasure trove of Tiffany's boxes?<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaYLf_c_-nI/AAAAAAAAAIY/Q8gwXInvOp8/s1600-h/DominoContest_ValerieHart3.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaYLf_c_-nI/AAAAAAAAAIY/Q8gwXInvOp8/s400/DominoContest_ValerieHart3.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306941855139625586" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Lots of love to all,<br /></div>BetsyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300906492348282767.post-19088825012636904662009-02-22T09:16:00.000-08:002009-02-22T10:40:49.286-08:00My Domino Inspiration...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaGaB9binsI/AAAAAAAAAIA/tbCxfrDHUxo/s1600-h/1231898579.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SaGaB9binsI/AAAAAAAAAIA/tbCxfrDHUxo/s400/1231898579.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305691194479779522" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I live in Manhattan in uber-modern highrise in Hells kitchen, which is ironic to all who know me. I'm more of a west village brownstone or a pre-war coop type of gal. Prior to getting married, I did live in a gorgeous west village apartment. However, when we went through the premarital consolidation of households, the owned apartment (my gorgeous husband purchased our apartment prior to meeting me) won out over the rented apartment... the sacrifices one makes for love.<br /><br />Prior to my arrival, my husband's "style" was bachelor pad "chic" (read: black sloping faux-leather couches and wrought iron everything. The man actually slept on an air mattress for an extended period of time.) Needless to say, part of the condition of my moving in was that the bachelor furniture had to go. I don't think he thought that I really meant it, but as soon as he said, "You can sell my couch" that couch was on Craigslist and was gone (undoubtedly to some other man cave). Lest you think I was overreacting, one of my fabulous friends (with whom I had discussed the state of my soon-to-be-betrothed's decor) actually wrote back to the craiglist post I had sent him as evidence for my laments and said, "I see...I thought you were joking." No, no friends it was just that bad.<br /><br />So, in deciding how to decorate the apartment (over which I had full rein), my attempts to solicit opinions from Mr. Wentworth were usually met with grunts, groans, shrugging of shoulders and gnashing of teeth. After one particularly heated discussion over his lack of participation, (note: my husband is British so by heated I mean that it was actually obvious that we were both annoyed) it finally came out that he didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I was discussing the various pros and cons of going mid-century modern vs. contemporary. So instead of explaining myself in words, on Saturday morning, we sat in bed looking through my archive of every Domino ever printed (up to that point) and pointed at pictures we liked.<br /><br />And from that, our apartment was born. Lots of ikea, a little bit of crate and barrel and some smatterings of ebay and here we are. More on the actual components and finds later. Send me your inspirations. I'll be sharing some of the fabulous contest entries I've already received later in the week.<br /><br />Lots of love,<br />BetsyUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300906492348282767.post-10082279675054169332009-02-19T09:56:00.001-08:002009-02-19T10:23:47.479-08:00Contest! No. (Though they are obviously exceedingly worthy objects of a personal crusade and I fully support such. If that's your thing - just show me where to go, sign, protest etc).<br /><br />No, it's the news that Conde Naste has decided to close Domino that broke this camel's back.<br /><br />After a week of crying in my chianti (one finds reds very soothing at this time of year), I have decided that I REFUSE to accept this lying down.<br /><br />I haven't *quite* figured out how I'm going to convince Conde to reverse this very unwise course of action - YET. But I will. You can just feel the love that has lived in this house over the years. And now it feels lonely - like it needs us to come and give it some lovin.' So pray to the real estate gods for us my lovelies...<br /><div><br />Its an old rambling farm house full of <span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="COLOR: rgb(0,153,0)">wide-plank wood floors</span></span> and fireplaces. The grounds are glorious - lots of land for Murphy and Cricket to roam and romp and roll in delicious smells (Miss Cricket is particularly fond of this last activity and gets most offended when we dare to remove these precious odors...alas how she suffers.)<br /><br />There are even <span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="COLOR: rgb(51,204,0)">"specimen" trees</span></span>. For those of us who are new to the wonderful world of real estate lingo - specimen trees are big trees. very very big trees. <span style="COLOR: rgb(51,204,0);font-size:180%;" >Bucolic bliss</span> here we come!<br /><br />Originally, we wanted to get a real fixer-upper - something that we could gut down to the bones and build back up as our own. This house however, has had some work done to it already...they've made it livable (which is always nice) but I think I'll have to redo the kitchen and bathroom updates...because they're ok...but not FABULOUS...take the kitchen:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFuZTcEeYq1_mG8-uaAGC4lm5VNDUifDmPm6Mno1-So4xwH91XxhxP7jdW8G3iwbaf4XfSC8Lz_Aht0csG60itF-9CcWT_VSF2XUfSkiKZq8rBsPhnMaQ0BCnFEh8JtdHYoHU4e5z_5jw/s1600-h/kitchen.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254234021081860530" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFuZTcEeYq1_mG8-uaAGC4lm5VNDUifDmPm6Mno1-So4xwH91XxhxP7jdW8G3iwbaf4XfSC8Lz_Aht0csG60itF-9CcWT_VSF2XUfSkiKZq8rBsPhnMaQ0BCnFEh8JtdHYoHU4e5z_5jw/s400/kitchen.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />Its ok... all the right elements - just the wrong combo...so I spent most of the day imaging how I am going to fix it.<br /><br />I think the first order of business will be to <span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="COLOR: rgb(51,204,0)">paint the cabinets</span></span> - I'm thinking of a creamy white like Farrow and Ball's Tallow. And then a warm-toned neutral on the walls. My dream kitchen would be more of the cool toned neutral - think white cabinets, carrera marble and black accents - but since the floor is warm toned, I need to work with it. Basically the ultimate goal is something like:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMWvohMZFsCgrN-O0uVlZEsX5MWMRl-3jF65i4ACEt_k0Gb2_zK7K_ltfhkM_f7Qez6YIdiGR21fwsOTySWAUyUhbVKMLANridiS5nTruzow4ycgulTv7o1-nfMF1S0yJlxeAi8zx1cwQ/s1600-h/de26ac02b006ab164d50d876fe87e089.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254238904394888386" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMWvohMZFsCgrN-O0uVlZEsX5MWMRl-3jF65i4ACEt_k0Gb2_zK7K_ltfhkM_f7Qez6YIdiGR21fwsOTySWAUyUhbVKMLANridiS5nTruzow4ycgulTv7o1-nfMF1S0yJlxeAi8zx1cwQ/s400/de26ac02b006ab164d50d876fe87e089.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />or...<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC-0JyQMSdNkHb4B3OOvdNf9T3NRtk2dGOa3YQh6b8MXenDzNjFksvUpHYf1RsqWRWpBSJ8QTJ4QPykivlJZCMPlevA3tnE3dVP8_DUSuxLk5bd-4jG03RK-kRpT3DzERILb8lDxAnq0w/s1600-h/kitchen-old-world-raney-richardson_e.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254238689430099202" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC-0JyQMSdNkHb4B3OOvdNf9T3NRtk2dGOa3YQh6b8MXenDzNjFksvUpHYf1RsqWRWpBSJ8QTJ4QPykivlJZCMPlevA3tnE3dVP8_DUSuxLk5bd-4jG03RK-kRpT3DzERILb8lDxAnq0w/s400/kitchen-old-world-raney-richardson_e.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiRfZxM4Plc17yeVexj1DGHRIqnzAQBFitIyK4xQDUcbM7qn19QpP_fbXGlysArZQtWc0OLZ7CHm49xofmb8oQ0F8lg0P-p7abwm8sAFsafPB274O3utrf4hl0Ylh-5Cm65e13XpFgcZU/s1600-h/images2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254240324498874514" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiRfZxM4Plc17yeVexj1DGHRIqnzAQBFitIyK4xQDUcbM7qn19QpP_fbXGlysArZQtWc0OLZ7CHm49xofmb8oQ0F8lg0P-p7abwm8sAFsafPB274O3utrf4hl0Ylh-5Cm65e13XpFgcZU/s400/images2.jpg" border="0" /></a>I'd like to have a chandelier over the island...something black and sparkly.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx0iLei3BFe7AcaMlzeGoQDLopkMIpMepaY_cX9nBpuWohAIbUf9hFkqI0LVTwK9sVBS55ABbU6dM47Nn0tbLRJIkzF04LTt_Tg3HUFNhKwguSZzhpz2tOsU9nLsitIbo2tbYipE9SZ-c/s1600-h/images.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254241056243502034" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx0iLei3BFe7AcaMlzeGoQDLopkMIpMepaY_cX9nBpuWohAIbUf9hFkqI0LVTwK9sVBS55ABbU6dM47Nn0tbLRJIkzF04LTt_Tg3HUFNhKwguSZzhpz2tOsU9nLsitIbo2tbYipE9SZ-c/s400/images.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Or maybe a little Murano glass action...There are just so many possibilities!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />As my indulgent, loving husband can attest, I am happiest when nesting and lord, could I nest in this house. Minor hiccup.<br /><br />Mr. Wentworth is rolling his eyes, taking deep inhalations of breath and looks like he may say "Yes, dear" at any moment. He has embraced the phrase "Yes dear" but delivers it in a long-suffering tone tinged with sarcasm... at which point I have to growl at him ... and then he does this innocent "What? From <a href="http://www.jcrew.com/">J.Crew </a>to <a href="http://www.jonathanadler.com/">Jonathan Adler</a>, the blue blazer and pearls are definitely back in full effect.<br /><br />I am particularly pleased by the <span style="font-size:180%;color:#33cc00;">kelly green</span> palettes that have been popping up everywhere. For instance this delicious bedroom from Mr. Adler:<br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250875856549803362" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDhDJ9me_w-34MUJvOBO_iiZ22crEVcHzXNJMvWzWi0AEMza-5lL5clNkG02PT7pYRJbQu0uAOrs9pEpWFM8ESer8oizpyhX5Ishhhy7YKcjJ2sIRES0UhcMUE5nBYpuogpbji5RcMLvU/s320/jonathans_green_bedroom.jpg" border="0" /><br />And a wonderfully preppy monogram (although when are monograms NOT preppy?) by <a href="http://www.jackandlulu.com/">Jack & Lulu</a>:<br /><br /><div><p align="left"></p><p align="left"></p><br /><p align="left"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250873936017607394" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjClSwGDS-zUN-n-lvuPM32VxbEH-e1oyQzbxvL2kl2qTG8qsl6snX6bUwoIgR0thAn0F3uBRuCx0mDraAI3-FuTW-r_2EgrUM4t-tZ4Oilv048B-e1sXKU3oeA3PclffyUwMV1Mu8SOe4/s320/jack_and_lulu_greenlattice_wa.gif" border="0" /></p><p>And this - the most beautiful dining room ever decorated (hyperbole and likely to be disputed/contradicted later on but its definitely my choice for 2008) by Mary MacDonald:</p><br /><p></p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254901287212881554" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFN8oXuhUqjybZRaZXRP5iDMU03hxBOtF8e3cup3_kocS5SzWrMdx7XvoQPb5K2bVqS87bowsGo_6820l-nx9cNDfsDpG47c-2H-Y24n_yGO4esDKF0vb4v14YKi4dCps1qkdnqF4Ocn8/s400/mmcdonald1_via_peak_of_chic.jpg" border="0" /><br /><p>And speak of all things Kelly... I am one of the masses who adore Ms. <span style="font-size:180%;color:#33cc00;">Kelly Wearstler.</span> And, although I would adore her more without the crimped-out/cracked-out hair that she's been sporting on Top Design (mother of god, woman, comb thyself!), there is no denying the fabulousness of her designs. She has a wonderful elegance and confidence...<br /><br />Which was why I was more than a little shocked to see <a href="http://http//decorno.blogspot.com/2008/07/no-more.html"><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="color:#33cc00;">Decorno's post</span></span> </a>on her days as a Playboy pinup (WARNING - Ms. Wearstler's bosoms are featured QUITE prominently). </p><br /><p>Now, my past is not without its scandalous tidbits (Mr. Wentworth encourages me to use the term "titbits" which is British for tidbits apparently, but I am vetoing his suggestion as being just a bit too much) Yes, <span style="color:#009900;"><span style="font-size:180%;">Mr. Wentworth is British</span>...</span>and proud of it. He's also very handsome in my humble opinion and the combination of his cheeky smile and delicious accent is probably why he gets away with far more than he should. But when a man says things like, "<span style="color:#009900;">Shall I help you tidy</span>?" I mean really who wouldn't just melt into a puddle on the floor? But I digress.)</p><br /><p>I'm sure there are a few indiscreet pictures of me floating about - in fact my wedding photographer insisted on photographing my person as I wiggled into my wedding dress...upon hearing this Mr. Wentworth was not too pleased and inquired as to, "<span style="color:#009900;">Why the photographer was seeing you in your knickers?</span>" Humm. </p><br /><p>Where was I? </p><br /><p>Oh yes, the prominent display of Ms. Wearstlers bosoms in Playboy. I'm all for fabulous females embracing their beauty and being proud of their figures - but not so a man can sit there and pretend to read the articles. (I love that they think we buy this). </p><br /><p>Ladies, if we got together and collectively decided to stop starving ourselves, we would be officially ruling the world within six months - think about the amount of time and energy we devote to making ourselves looking like adolescent boys. </p><br /><p>I was just sad to see Ms. Wearstler as a Playboy bunny. It knocked her off of the pedestal of fabulousness on which I had placed her and brought her back down to human being trying to make a living. And I know this makes me a judgmental b*tch, but there you go.<br /><br />With love,<br />Wentworth.<br /><br /><br /></p><br /><p><br /></p></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7300906492348282767.post-56630853026003123482008-09-26T18:04:00.001-07:002009-05-31T13:01:24.334-07:00Ms. Wentworth Lives for a Day<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SW00hcOX0rI/AAAAAAAAAAk/ebKVt8fqCUg/s144/082820061622356575.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 144px; height: 144px;" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ajnUW0pEWkQ/SW00hcOX0rI/AAAAAAAAAAk/ebKVt8fqCUg/s144/082820061622356575.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />So I decided to follow my <span style="color: rgb(153, 51, 153);font-size:180%;" >BLISS</span> and start blogging on design...and wouldn't you know it, the universe being the gloriously wonderful place that it is, <span style="color: rgb(204, 51, 204);font-size:130%;" >Domino magazine selected one of my deco books as one of the </span><br /><div align="center"></div><p align="center"><span style="color: rgb(153, 51, 153);font-size:180%;" >BEST DECO BOOKS</span></p><p>on their site!
